Abstract
This study investigates whether long-wave electromagnetic (EM) radiation with a frequency of 1-15 MHz has an effect on the physiology of tomato, cucumber and anthurium. This is done using modulators, which according to users, have a positive effect on plant-growth during the low-light winter months. This could lead to energy saving. Two test setups were created in this study, of which a highwire cultivation in the greenhouse and a cultivation in climate cells. However, no clear effect was found of EM radiation produced by the modulators on the physiology of the plant. The differences that were found in growth and photosynthesis were not in favor of the EM- treatment and in the greenhouse the difference seemed to be rather due to a difference in light sum. Whether long-wave EM radiation with a frequency of 1-15MHz has an effect on plant growth is difficult to conclude. The field strength generated by the modulators was low and did not correspond with previously published research. Based on this study, long wave EM radiation with a frequencyof 1-15MHz and a field strength of 0.125 nT is not making a clear contribution to saving energy in the greenhouse horticulture sector.
