Abstract
Concerns about the rate of subsidence and the level of sustainability of current land use led to this study. Its objectives were: assessing the characteristics of peat soils in the area under the Western Johore Integrated Agricultural Development Project; making recommendations for appropriate land and water management techniques to maintain and improve the agricultural potential of these lands; making proposals for future utilization of these lands, with minimum adverse impact on the environment; drafting guidelines for controlled conservation and development of other peat soil areas in Malaysia.
