Abstract

The Dutch government and its partners are taking measures to create a coherent network of protected natural and semi-natural areas in order to conserve, restore and enhance nature and biodiversity and improve the conservation status of these areas. To keep the government informed of progress, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) has selected indicators to provide answers to the following questions: What progress is being made with realising the national ecological network? What proportion of the Netherlands (of land, inland water, and of coastal and marine surface) consists of protected natural areas? and Is the realisation of the national ecological network creating larger and better connected areas of natural habitat? The selected indicators have been updated and analysed to assess this progress, as has been done in the Assessment of the Dutch Human Environment report. This report describes the technical background to the data and methods used to bring these indicators up to date, the results of the policy measures taken as assessed by the indicators, and the reliability and plausibility of the results.
