Abstract
This study examined the development and effects of the documentary series Voor dik & dun. The series was based on the Entertainment-Education (E&E) strategy and aimed to contribute to the prevention of overweight. Data were collected by means of three perspectives: (television- and health education) professionals involved in the programme development (in-depth interviews), health scientists (in-depth interviews) and viewers (focus groups and questionnaires). Moreover, viewing figures and website statistics were collected. Results show Voor dik & dun was not very successful in combining both Entertainment and Education. The series could bring about several effects on the health beliefs of viewers that watched every episode, but the separate episodes fell short on both E&E criteria. To achieve the desired effects, E&E programmes should look for a better elaboration of the most important criteria; incidental learning processes by means of positive identification with transitional role models.
