Abstract
Nature policies increasingly involve complex and integrated issues that require an evidence and knowledge base drawn from different scientific fields. Scientific knowledge comes in various forms, such as quantitative data, qualitative data and expert knowledge. In addition, there is a growing recognition that other sorts of knowledge or information, such as local knowledge, are also needed to compile a complete picture of an issue and its context and to design measures that are feasible to implement. Various challenges stand in the way: it is difficult for those involved to acquire a shared understanding and, during the course of a project, to compile and maintain an overview of all the available knowledge and interrelations between the different types of knowledge. In this project we investigated how visualisation techniques can support the process of understanding and applying different types of knowledge within the context of policy issues.
