    Abstract

An experiment was carried out on reducing ammonia emission from a cubicle house for young stock by acidification of slurry and periodic inundation of the slats. The emissions during three different acidification treatments were compared with a reference period without any acidification. One treatment was acidification of the slurry beneath the slats. In both other treatments additional inundation of the slats with acidified slurry was conducted during short periods every six or three hours (tide system). The ammonia emission in the reference period was 38 g/h at a temperature of 10 °C and an average liveweight of 219 kg. By acidification of the slurry, the emission was reduced with 34%. Using the tide system every six or three hours, the emission dropped with 44% and 61% respectively, in comparison to the reference period.
