Abstract

In 2021 and 2022, a field trial on sandy soil in Overijssel was conducted involving mechanical (disc harrow and rotary tiller) and chemical (glyphosate) destruction of the catch crop Italian ryegrass. The catch crop was destroyed at two time points (early March and early April). From March to July, soil samples were taken at four time points from the 0-60 cm layer to determine the amount of mineral soil nitrogen (N). Additionally, at the end of this period, the aboveground N uptake of maize was measured. There were no significant differences in the amounts of mineral soil N between the treatments with mechanical destruction of the catch crop and destruction with glyphosate. Also, there were hardly any differences in aboveground N uptake by maize between the treatments with mechanical destruction of the catch crop and destruction with glyphosate in the period late June-early July. Especially in 2022, during the period of May-June, the amounts of mineral soil N from the treatments with early destruction (early March) of the catch crop were significant greater than those from the treatments with late destruction (early April).
