Abstract

At the request of the Dutch Ministry of LVVN, Wageningen Livestock Research conducted a second evaluation in 2024 of the progress of the Action Plan “Towards more natural calvings in luxury beef cattle” over the period 2019-2023. This evaluation was based on genetic and phenotypic data of the Belgian Blue and Improved Red and White cattle breeds, combined with interviews with various stakeholders. Support for the project “Bewust Natuurlijke Luxe” and participation in the measurement program has gradually decreased. However, during that period breeders made better use of breeding values in the selection of bulls for more natural calving, especially for the Improved Red and White breed, which shows a slightly positive genetic trend. The expected percentage of natural calvings in 2035 for each of the two breeds is at most 32%.
