Abstract

The aim of this foundations paper is to develop initial understanding based on a critical engagement with the existing literature of how key terms that are used to frame the work of the Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures (TESF) Network Plus are understood. In particular, the paper will seek to develop working definitions of the ideas of ‘sustainable development’ (SD), ‘sustainable futures’, ‘education for sustainable development’ (ESD), ‘education systems’ and of ‘transformation’ that are fundamental for our work. Rather than seeking to provide a comprehensive review of the literature, however, a task that has been undertaken elsewhere (e.g. Wals and Kieft 2010), the focus of the discussion will be on how these key terms are understood in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implications of these understandings for the work of TESF.
