Surface water and groundwater flow to the central inland depression, which causes rising water-tables, waterlogging and salinity problems. Technologies were developed for efficient on-farm water management, conjunctive use of saline and fresh water. Criteria were developed for drainage with a built-in reuse system. On-farm and regional integrated simulation models were developed. Experiments, complemented with model simulations, were implemented regarding reduced water application, drainage techniques, reuse of drainage water and brackish water fishery. The on-farm water management decision-support system extrapolated local recommendations to state level. The integrated model analysed the composite effects of regional water management.
