Abstract
The livestock transport sector aims to respond scientifically to conditions that may arise during animal transport, in order to safeguard animal comfort and welfare. As part of the Future-Proof Animal Transport project (2019–2024), commercial transports of pigs, calves, and cattle were monitored under various weather conditions. During these transports, driving data, temperature, humidity, and animal behaviour were recorded. Temperature distribution within the vehicle varied by species, type of vehicle, and journey, with the warmest spot usually located at the front lower compartment. Lying behaviour was species-specific; however, during longer journeys, animals tended to lie down even while the vehicle was moving. Drinking systems were rarely used during short trips, but were utilised by all species and categories during longer transports.
