Abstract

Over the past decades, consumer awareness of quality and safety of food has considerably increased. The German media landscape, conscious of their duty to provide information to society, cater for this interest and report extensively on cases of food contamination and other problems concerning food hygiene or food quality. In the course of this increased awareness, the food sectors in Germany and other European countries repeatedly became the focus of extensive media coverage. Consumer reactions and political players' reaction to this media coverage led to massive attention which under the catchword "food scandal" resulted in more or less specific negative demand shocks, and political regulation for parts of primary agricultural production and the food industry was accordingly adapted. This article deals with the extent of media perception, and how media perception of such incidents has developed between 2000 and 2012. The media analysis of German daily newspapers and professional journals provides information on the duration and course of the attention paid to the food sector. Of the 15 identified food scandals that have received significant media attention, selected incidents are described in more detail. The article ends with a comparative analysis of the incidents identified and thus constitutes a first step towards reducing the information deficit with regard to the occurrence and dynamics of food scandals.
