Abstract

This chapter discusses the effects of soil chemicals on seed dormancy and germination, and on seed bank dynamics. The occurrence, signal translation, and mechanisms of action are discussed for some of the most important chemical cues (nitrate, allelochemicals, allelochemical inhibitors and promoters, gaseous compounds, smoke-derived chemicals, oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene).
