Abstract
The aim of this study was to test whether an external manure cooling system can lower the temperature of manure stored in manure pits at 8-10 ºC under practical conditions on a dairy farm. This to significantly reduce methane emissions form manure, i.e. > 50%. During the year of this (case-control) trial, the average temperature of the cooled manure was 10.3 ºC. This resulted in an average methane emission reduction of 89% between case and control. Additional research is needed to further develop manure cooling systems. The focus should also be on reducing other emissions (integral systems), such as ammonia, and taking advantage of the low winter temperatures, solar and wind energy generated on the dairy farm, and the heat released when cooling slurry.
