Abstract

This paper presents a comparison between technological progress and economic policies as alternatives to promote rural development and reduction of deforestation. The comparison is based on a bioeconomic model of three types of farms found in the Atlantic zone of Costa Rica, a tropical lowland region of recent agrarian colonization.
