title = "Tailoring Biotechnologies: A Humanist Perspective?",
abstract = "The development of S&T is one of the core issues of our time.1 Technology development is seen both as an important factor for “progress” and as a part of—rather than solution to—profound problems. For example, the concerns with global climate change are closely related to the technology (combustion engine, cooling systems, etc.) used in all kinds of consumer products. Besides this complex role of technology in the development of societal problems, technology is also integrated into the daily life of the individual, from consumer goods to the microcomponents and systemic combinations that enable them. The human is so intertwined with his/her engineering now that the way back to nature is no longer an option. This demands a critical and constructive reflection on the relationship between humans and technology.",
