Abstract

The Dutch greenhouse horticulture sector faces increasing societal pressure due to issues surrounding food safety, climate change, and sustainable energy. To maintain its “license to produce,” the sector must strengthen its connection with consumers. Group interviews revealed crucial challenges across demographic, economic, socio-cultural, technological, ecological, and political dimensions. This resulted in three concrete future scenarios with a 25-year horizon: “Technological Efficiency,” “Connection with Food,” and “Self-sufficient & Secure,” which can mutually reinforce each other. Two workshop rounds refined these scenarios further, and developed specific indicators and knowledge questions. The outcomes point to four essential core areas: (1) implementation of innovations in practice, (2) improving perception through transparency, (3) ensuring economic feasibility, and (4) creation of facilitating preconditions. Transdisciplinary teams addressing these themes programmatically are crucial for a successful system leap toward sustainable greenhouse production.
