Abstract

In this chapter we discuss the relationship between education and sustainable development. This relationship is one that has two sides: on the one hand education is the indispensable condition if sustainable development is to be successful. But, on the other, the idea of sustainability is also a magnifying glass revealing how the challenges of our era can only be met if education itself changes. Sustainable development provides an innovative and highly relevant approach to rethinking general education at the beginning of the 21st century. We discuss below the origin and development of the concept of education for sustainable development, its defining characteristics, and then present innovative examples of its implementation.
