This study examined which instruments could be used to give substance to the objectives of strengthening the competitiveness and sustainability of Dutch agriculture. The study focused on the application of the CAP after 2013. To this end, an inventory of existing instruments has been made and described, and then tested on the basis of a number of criteria. The preferences of agricultural entrepreneurs were ascertained by means of a survey, and the opinions of sector and chain experts were also sought. The policies of a number of other EU member states were examined to ascertain whether they offer suggestions for policy in the Netherlands.
