Abstract

The spraying of crop protection chemicals should result in a more direct application to the trees providing better spray coverage and prevention of drift to the soil and the air. In a series of experiments, an experimental cross-flow sprayer and a conventional sprayer equipped with flat-fan nozzles were compared with a conventional axial fan sprayer with hollow cone nozzles. The spray techniques were evaluated on the deposition distribution in the tree, the emission to the ground in the field, the spray drift deposition on the soil surface next to the sprayed field and the drift to the air. The comparison was made for two tree types: spindle form and transplanted alley-trees. The level of spray drift deposition next to the sprayed field differs for the two tree types. The experimental sprayer in general reduces spray drift deposition and increases spray deposit on the tree leaves.
