Abstract

Within the program ‘Greenhouse as Source of Energy’ of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature and Glastuinbouw Nederland, a climate-neutral year-round cultivation concept for cut Anthurium flowers was demonstrated. The 26 months cultivation, without artificial light, took place in the innovative 2Save Energy greenhouse at Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture in Bleiswijk. “Climate neutral” here means “all-electric” without fossil fuels for electricity or heating. The 2saveEnergy greenhouse consists of a double-layer cover of high transparent clear glass and a diffuse F-clean film. Due to good insulation and a heat pump for latent heat recovery, the heat demand is limited. Four anthurium varieties (Calisto, Eterno, Midori, Moments) were grown for 26 months in pots with Rockwool cubes and 2 plants each. Results met the expectations: with the heat harvest from a dehumidification installation and 55 kWh of electricity (heat pump and fans) we could meet the yearly heat demand. Production, flower quality and shelf life were comparable to commercial practice. Major steps were set towards zero emission of crop protection products. For a successful implementation in practice there are no technical or crop-related obstacles identified, but there are certainly knowledge questions formulated. Anthurium cultivation is well on its way to climate neutrality.
