Abstract
Background: A salutogenic or asset based approach focusing on what can be done to build community capability and a good quality of life requires a major shift in the way we choose indicators and evaluate health promotion strategies which are often still disease and problem-oriented. Aim of the workshop: To discuss opportunities for collecting asset-based type of evidence. Methods: This workshop explores issues and opportunities identified by health promotion practitioners when faced with designing evaluation for programmes underpinned by a salutogenic approach. This draws on collective experiences (2003- 2011) of participants and tutors in European Summerschools in Health Promotion (ETC-PHHP). Part of the assignment of these summerschools is to groupwise develop asset-based approaches and to plan appropriate evaluation. Findings: Health from n salutogenic perspective means an active, productive and "good" life. This requires indicators on individual, community and societal level and also insight in the systemic relations between these levels. Furthermore, research methodology should be in line with an asset-based approach which is participatory and about collective reflection and learning. Conclusion: If we apply a salutogenic perspective the conceptualisation of health is different which implies we also have to search for other evidence as well as other type of research methodologies.
