Salutogenesis in the Context of Learning Processes

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

Salutogenesis provides an approach to learning that informs what to learn as well as what constitutes healthy learning processes. In this chapter, we first outline the definition and concepts of learning processes in general and healthy learning and supportive learning environments specifically. Learning is a lifelong process of acquiring new understanding and skills and takes place in the spheres of everyday life. Healthy learning is a process where people and systems increase the control over, and improve health, wellbeing and quality of life. An enabling environment is a well-known prerequisite for healthy learning. Salutogenic learning processes refer to meaningful experiences on individual and collective level and reflection that support SOC. Four guiding principles for shaping salutogenic learning processes are explained. Next, examples of salutogenesis-oriented learning within different settings are described. This chapter closes by redefining salutogenesis-oriented learning and what this means for the role of the facilitator.
