Roadmap and action plan to enhance the sustainability of horticulture in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia: Results of a workshop

Research output: Book/ReportReportProfessional

Abstract

This report presents workshop results during a short assignment by Wageningen University & Research commissioned by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Jakarta, aimed to support the transition of horticulture in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia, towards a market-oriented production system that delivers safe products through sustainable practices, in particular through low use of pesticides. The process of developing a long-term roadmap and a short-term action plan to achieve this, was started. The focus was on improving horticultural production while considering the broader context of the food system. Two scenarios were identified in the workshop to differentiate between a short, quick fix and a more gradual, process-oriented approach. These scenarios are not mutually exclusive and their combination seem the most logical way forward. Recommendations are given to support the implementation. The transition towards greater sustainability is a long lasting process that requires involvement of stakeholders.
