Removal efficiency of a dry filter for abatement of particulate matter emissions from poultry houses

Abstract

To be able to comply with European legislation on ambient particulate matter (PM) concentrations, measures need to be taken in The Netherlands to reduce emissions from major sources. The contribution of livestock houses, especially poultry houses, to the total primary emission of PM in The Netherlands is estimated to be approximately 20%. PM in the exhaust air of animal houses mainly originates from manure, feathers, skin, feed and bedding material and contains considerable amounts of endotoxins, bacteria, fungi, viruses, ammonia, odour and antibiotic residues. In view of this, a plan of action was set up for development and testing of PM abatement options for poultry houses. In this study, the PM removal efficiency of a commercially available dry filter was validated under field conditions at two layer barn locations. This double-layered polyethylene/polypropylene filter has recently been introduced into the livestock sector and is applied in front of the end wall ventilators, removing PM through inertial impaction at an air velocity of 0.5-1.0 m/s. Upstream and downstream of the filter, 24-hour duplicate sampling of PM10 and PM2.5 was performed gravimetrically with cyclone samplers and constant flow pumps according to European sampling standards (CEN-EN 12341:1999 for PM10 and CEN-EN 14907:2005 for PM2.5) and continuous PM10 measurements were carried out with a light scattering technique (DustTrak model 8520, TSI, Shoreview, USA). In total, 12 measurements were carried out at two different barn locations, balanced of the year and the laying period to include relevant sources of variation and ensure a representative overall removal efficiency. Based on these data, removal efficiencies for PM10 and PM2.5 (± STDV between locations) were 40.1 ± 0.9 and 0.7 ± 8.3 % respectively. This study shows that the filter is an effective solution for livestock houses in need of a moderate PM emission abatement level
