Abstract
Recreational activities in green/blue areas was monitored by analysing data from the Continu Vrijetijdsonderzoek (CVTO, a continuous outdoor leisure activities survey for the years 2006/2007, 2008/2009, 2010/2011, 2012/2013 and 2015. In the CVTO each week about 350 people are questioned about their leisure activities over the past week. This study focused on leisure activities in and around forests, natural areas, farmland, parks, recreational areas, water bodies and the sea. For each type of area an analysis was made of changes in visitor numbers, shifts in recreational activities and background information on visitors (including age and urbanicity of home address). The data show that farmland and forest are by far the most visited green/blue areas in the Netherlands. Visits to these areas have grown steadily between 2006 and 2015. However, visits to green/blue areas by children under 12 have declined, particularly visits to forest.
