    Abstract

    This article reviews various reactive and proactive alert and early warning systems that can be used for the identification of emerging risks to food safety, both within the European Union and at the global level. Recent developments include the establishment of a unit dedicated to emerging risks at the European Food Safety Authority; the development of the European Media Monitor and the Emerging Risk Detection Support System; and the launch of the Food and Agriculture Organization's Emergency Prevention System Food Safety.
