Praktijkimplementatie CH4 en NH3 reductie via voerspoor - praktijkrapport 2020: Voerstrategieën om de methaan- en ammoniakemissie te reduceren in de melkveehouderij

Abstract

This report describes the first prototyping round of the implementation of feeding strategies to reduce methane emissions on five dairy farms. The project goal is to reduce both methane and ammonia emission with 30% compared to the reference year. Feeding strategies were developed, implemented and tested on efficiency on five commercial dairy farms. According to model calculations, 5-15% reduction was realized on all farms. On two farms this reduction was measured as well. To achieve a higher reduction potential changes in roughage quality are probably necessary. An integrated approach is essential to accomplish the project goals. One of the challenges is to make objective decisions when strategies are conflicting with other goals. The first prototyping round showed that it is possible to reduce methane emission up to 20% short-term. This study will continue to search for feeding strategies with long-term, annual reduction potentials of both methane and ammonia.
