Abstract

This chapter discusses the characterization, identification and naming of bacteria. Some detection and identification methods including conventional and serological techniques, and some more recent ones are described. The other topics mentioned include: pathogenicity tests, re-isolation, re-identification and the components of a diagnostic report. Tables containing main characteristics of plant pathogenic bacteria, and names of seedborne and seed-transmitted bacteria are presented.
