Optimization of regional water management (quantity and quality) through scenario analysis

    Abstract

    Uncontrolled development of a region often leads to environmental degradation. In regions where the hydrological systems provide a high degree of spatial integration this leads to direct conflicts of interests, e.g. between agriculture and nature. Scenario studies can give decision support to regional authorities that are responsible for achieving a balanced and sustainable development. The conventional method of decision support is through evaluating scenarios with a simulation model. A more powerful method is to combine it with the use of an optimization model, for generating efficient scenarios. The methods are illustrated by case-studies of integrated water management (quantity and quality).
