Abstract
This report describes a study focussed on a sector-wide inventory of the critical success factors for antibiotic reduction in rabbit farming in the Netherlands. Results show a wide variation between farms in antibiotic use, farm size, production level and efficiency, management of animal health, hygiene and bio-safety, and the vision/perception of rabbit farmers on stress factors for the rabbits. The study indicates that not only production and technical variables, but also the knowledge/attitude and behaviour of the rabbit farmer, matter in terms of antibiotic use. The results do not offer a direct perspective for action to reduce antibiotic use on rabbit farms. For example, the dataset does not allow to make archetypes of farms or procedures (good practices) that can serve as an example for farmers with higher antibiotic use figures. The major action-directed conclusion is that the attitude/behaviour and knowledge of the rabbit farmer appear to matter and could be an important starting point for designing interventions.
