Abstract

In this chapter, we contribute to ongoing theorisations of the moving body as a medium for situated knowledges, by elaborating on listening while walking as a practice of intimate participation with place, a relational act that seeks to enter a resonant relationship with place, which emphasises the researcher’s performative presence in the process of producing geographical knowledges. The chapter presents five ‘sonic vignettes’ from Hansen’s recent fieldwork on the island Pellworm, in the German Wadden Sea, to reflect on listening through the whole body in movement and stillness as a means to explore place-relations in their multiplicity of expressions and attachments. The sonic vignettes present reflections accompanied by audio recordings, which evoke moments of listening in-between bodies, relations and environments, reflecting the complex multi-sensoriality of experiences and soundings of place.
