"In 2010, researchers of Wageningen University and Research Centre compiled an essay-book in Dutch on “livestock farming with care” (“Over zorgvuldige veehouderij”) to contribute to the public debates on livestock farming. After its publication, many requests were received to provide a version in English, as these issues are much broader than the Netherlands. After producing an English summary, it was decided to publish a special issue of NJAS-Wageningen Journal of Life Sciences, an academic journal of life sciences, in which the scientific underpinning of the various aspects in the debate can be given. These comprise ethical aspects, veterinary as well as economic and consumer aspects and also scientific systems studies are presented in which different aspects are integrated."
