Abstract

In the Netherlands, badgers and beavers have been increasing in numbers and distribution range in recent decades. As a result conflict situations can arise, for example when burrows are built in infrastructure slopes or banks of waterways. The aim of this study was to gain insight into where locations with high risk of beaver/badger burrowing activity are and what mitigating measures are preferred. To answer these questions a habitat suitability analysis and a population viability analysis (LARCH) were carried out. In addition, a risk map was created and expert interviews were carried out to gain more insight into the effectiveness of reactive measures to sustainably mitigate and prevent damage to infrastructure.
