    Abstract

Food consumption and production in the Netherlands go hand in hand with several challenges in the field of sustainability. In the Monitor Voortgang Verduurzaming Voedselketens (‘Monitor for the Development of Sustainable Food Chains’) (MVVV), the most important sustainability issues (‘hotspots’) are charted for the ‘potato, vegetable and fruit (AGF)’ domain. Based on public data, the extent of progress over the past 5 to 10 years is determined. For hotspots such as ‘deadly accidents’ and ‘Maximum Residue Limits on fruit and vegetables’ the set targets have been achieved over the past years. Hotspots showing less progress and/or a number of issues of concern are ‘environmental impact of pesticides’, ‘nutrient leaching’, ‘CO2 emissions from greenhouse horticulture’ and ‘area of flowery field margins’.
