Abstract
In order to study the factors which limited or exacerbated the influence of the media on the Belgian parliamentary agenda between 1993 and 2000, we carried out a multi-level longitudinal analysis of 5 series of data. After emphasising the importance of the media agenda, our results show that the characteristics of the parties (size, in government or in opposition, level of appropriation of problems by groups) and the content of the government agenda influence the extent of the effect of the media on the topics, questions and lobbying in the Belgian Parliament. Finally the apparent increase in the impact of the media confirms the growing presence of a 'media logic' in political competition.
