Abstract
In the Netherlands hundreds of initiatives focus on advancing pollinators. In this study we looked at 12 initiatives, to gain insight in their success and failure factors. The research shows that initiatives sometimes operate individually, or are connected to a regional network, aimed at pollinators. More could be achieved if a link is made between these social networks and ecological networks for pollinators. The most common measure is sowing one-year mixtures of indigenous and exotic flowers, while pollinators benefit mainly from perennial, native species. Knowledge transfer can further increase the effectiveness of initiatives. The potential of government and agricultural land can also be further increased to promote pollinators.
