    Abstract

The typification of Clematis viticella L. is discussed, and a lectotype designated from the Clifford Herbarium (BM). A standard specimen for C. viticella‘Purpurea Plena Elegans’ has also been selected. Data from hybridization experiments and studies of natural distribution suggest that Clematis campaniflora Brotero is better treated as a subspecies, i.e. as C. viticella subsp. campaniflora (Brotero) Font Quer ex O. Bolòs & Vigo, than as either a species or variety.
