Abstract
In research, we often use validated questionnaires to measure behaviour and health in the population. In the Netherlands, an estimated 2.5 million people aged 16 or older are low-literate, of which many experience problems when filling out complex questionnaires. As a result, we may not have an accurate view of their health. This article describes our experiences of working with experts-by-experience from the Stichting Lezen en Schrijven (Foundation for Reading and Writing) to improve the SF-12 questionnaire. This resulted in insights to make questionnaires more suitable for low-literate populations.
