Abstract
This report describes the current wildfire risk in the Netherlands due to climate change and gives a prognosis of future risks. To effectively manage this risk, it is essential to systematically collect data on wildfires and their consequences. These statistics must have a statutory basis to secure and maintain a knowledge base. Adaptation measures can then be taken based on international scientifically-based best practices. At the moment, the Netherlands is insufficiently prepared for the wildfires of today and those of the future. Current policy is geared primarily to fire suppression and in some cases prevention by issuing warnings. There are various policy options to improve future preparedness for climate-related wildfire risks. Based on international lessons, an integrated approach rooted in the multiple layers of safety (awareness, prevention, mitigation, response, recovery) with robust multisector cooperation is likely more effective than a technological approach.
