Characteristic species of flora and funga for assessing the structure and function of Natura 2000 habitat types In this report characteristic species of habitat types of the Habitats Directive are defined as species ecologically linked to habitat types within the distribution area of the types in question. Trends in the occurrence of these species can therefore be used to assess the functioning of habitat types as a habitat for these species. Exhaustive lists of characteristic species have been drawn up for flora (vascular plants, mosses, stoneworts: all habitat types) and funga (lichens, mushrooms: selected habitat types), amounting to a total of 840 taxa, within which vascular plants are most strongly represented with 562 taxa. Marine habitat types were not considered. Habitat subtypes have their own lists. Existing lists of typical species, quality species of SNL-management types and indicator species for desiccation, acidification and eutrophication were used. The report presents the list of characteristic species of flora and funga and documents the principles used when drawing it up.
