Abstract

Plant breeding revolves around improving existing varieties in order that they cope better with changing growing conditions and consumer demands. The availability of sufficient genetic variation is crucial. Once the genetic variation present within a crop species becomes too low or is exhausted, breeders turn to related species or genera harbouring the desired novel traits.
