Abstract

In-home use tests are done to better understand how consumers interact with products in real-life situations. This understanding can be used to identify innovation opportunities, and to assess if innovations deliver against their promises and outperform current alternatives. This chapter summarizes and reviews current knowledge and practical aspects with respect to in-home testing in the food domain. Both qualitative observational studies, as well as quantitative in-home tests, will be addressed, and we will discuss different ways of measuring in-home behavior, as well as the underlying psychological processes that should be taken into consideration when designing a study. Furthermore, we will touch upon areas for further research.
