Abstract
With the increased amount of data that is collected on agriculture, we live in a time where data seems to be abundant. Through farm equipment and remote sensing, comes the potential for the development of new applications that can help food production and protect against worldwide food insecurity. Yet, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, if nothing changes the number of undernourished people globally will have increased to around one person out of every nine by 2017, with the majority being women and children. This chapter explores how the data revolution can best be put to use to help solve pressing issues of food security, hunger and nutrition – and contribute to achieving the UN SDG2 of zero hunger and malnutrition by 2030.
