    Abstract

    General study on the history of Dutch forests. Various aspects of the history of woodlands, forests and forestry. Analysis of various types of use and misuse of forests and woodlands by communities, local populations, landowners and local managers. Local forest management and forest legislation in the Dutch provinces. Timber supply for Dutch shipyards. Analysis of the development of prices of timber, firewood, and other forms of fuel and the interaction between them. Attention to demographical developments influencing the need for wood and forest products. Description of the introduction of exotic tree species from north America into the United Provinces and the position of the Netherlands as gateway to western Europe. The development of Dutch gardening in relation to French and English influences and of the use of diverse tree species in different types of gardens. Development of Dutch forestry science as a reflection of temporary trends in the German States, in France and in Britain. Description of cultivation of various tree species and the use that was made of them. Analysis of the attitude of men and society to nature in general and woodlands specifically, and of the attitude to the threat of wood shortage in the Netherlands.
