Abstract

Researchers Bram Bos and Ellen van Weeghel of Wageningen University & Research are working on innovations to stimulate the chicken's natural behaviour as much as possible, while greatly reducing emissions of ammonia and particulate matter. What they want to achieve is a very happy chicken in a clean environment. To this end, two innovations for practical use have been devised in collaboration with various companies. The dust bath house, where chickens can enjoy dust bathing and the manure slide, which allows chickens to scavenge in a clean substrate, releasing much less particulate matter and ammonia.
