Abstract

Gum arabic, the main product of Acacia senegal, is used in various industries (food, pharmaceutical, painting, etc). It is traded in local markets for processing and consumption within producing countries but mainly for the purpose of exportation as a non-timber forest product. Senegal is among the small gum producing countries in Africa, Sudan being the world's largest producer. In the late 1950's, Senegal's exports accounted for more than 10 percent of the world exports.
