    Abstract

The term 'grassland' is defined and types of grasslands and the origin of grasslands discussed briefly. Much grassland research is now multidisciplinary, increasing the number of measurements which may be taken. The choice of relevant factors to be measured is discussed, along with suggestions for increased measurement of some neglected factors such as persistence and biodiversity.
