Abstract

In the project ‘Making good use of biological combi air scrubbers’, research was conducted on biological combi air scrubbers on four farms. The study identified reasons why these air scrubbers do not always have a stable and good performance. In addition, measures were devised and tested to improve removal efficiency for ammonia and odour in the existing situations. For more than one year, the removal efficiency for ammonia was measured continuously; for odour, measurements were taken periodically. The odour samples were analysed using two methods: the sensory method according to odour standard EN-13725 and a chemical-analytical method. The latter method provides insight into the composition of the ventilated air. It showed that sulphurous components had a large share in the odour load of the outgoing airstream from the investigated air scrubbers. Opportunities for improved operation of the air scrubbers were found in several aspects: improvements in software for pH regulation, site-specific adjustment of control and parameters, information provision from the air scrubber to owner/manager, design and maintenance
