Abstract
This book deals with the glasshouse industry in The Netherlands. It describes the process of development of the sector, especially in relation with the influence of science. The theory of the scientification of the agricultural sector is analysed. It is concluded the sector is governing its development itself. Research institutes act more as stimuli for developments than as initiators. The co-operation between growers and researchers is seen as a very important factor for a rapid development.
In this book a lot of attention is given to the technical development. Overall this development has been very successful. In other fields like the labour organisation, marketing and adaptation to new competitors in Europe (and elsewhere) the sector has been less successful. A short history of the sector is included in the book.
